Cologne’s music scene after lockdown: Philipp Treudt and Jakub Končír portray artists between daily life and club nights, exploring isolation, change and a sense of community.
Just as the boysenberry crosses the blackberry and the loganberry, the photographic works of Philipp Treudt and Jakub Končír combine day and night into an immersive discourse on Cologne’s diverse subculture. For several months the photographers followed the music formats SOUND SOUND and Funky Bambi, showing the artists in their everyday lives and in their cultural context after a period marked by standstill.
While Philipp Treudt immerses himself in the artists’ private surroundings by day, Jakub Končír accompanies them at night to their performances at the bar Zum scheuen Reh. Both photographers above all pursue the question of how far a global crisis has affected artists’ ways of life and attitudes, what has stayed the same and what has changed for them. The answer lies in the contrast between the works, which show not only reorientation and isolation but also exchange and a sense of community between artists and audience. In this way the special importance of the music club emerges as a defining part of a city’s cultural life: a heterotopia that did not stand still in times of standstill but has kept evolving against the backdrop of social change.
